Here is City Manager Steve Hollister’s summary on our Fireworks Control activities planned for the next few weeks. Thanks to the City Manager's office for granting permission for CSSL to post Mr. Hollister's summary on our web site.
Public Safety Staffing Over 4th of July Holiday In response to yearly concerns regarding illegal fireworks activity, the Police Department has increased staffing for the 4th of July. Strong police presence will be maintained throughout the holiday weekend. It is anticipated that by maintaining a visible presence throughout the City and at Marina Park, the number of incidents involving fireworks will be kept to a minimum.
As in past years, there will be a significant increase in staffing of Police Officers during the peak hours for fireworks calls. The Marina Park picnic areas will remain open throughout the day, and the roadway will be closed to incoming visitors at approximately 7:00 p.m., except for customers of the restaurants, the Marina Inn and boating residents. The Mulford Point area will also be closed at 7:00 p.m. and will be patrolled closely for illegal fireworks activity. The entire Marina will be closed at 8:00 p.m.
The Police Department takes a “zero tolerance” stance on fireworks. Information will be given to local newspapers regarding illegal fireworks in the City. Additionally, an article has been posted on the Police Department’s website, www.slpdinfo.org, in the June edition of the crime prevention newsletter.
The Fire Department will be having additional apparatus on duty and will be very visible, roving throughout the community. They will be operating on an Incident Action Plan that will ensure that all resources are available should an emergency occur.
Both the Police and Fire Departments anticipate fireworks activity may continue throughout the weekend and are planning accordingly.
Park Rangers will be on duty in the parks through the weekend.
The Public Works Services Department has posted signs at all of our City limit entrances.
The community has been reminded of the fireworks ban in San Leandro through a number of methods.
- Letters have been sent to all Homeowner Associations to include information in their newsletters
- Schools have been asked to have a message about the fireworks ban on their marquees, and flyers about the City’s fireworks ban have been sent home with students in the middle and high schools.
- Flyers have been distributed to the libraries and the Marina Community Center.
- A message will run on the Auto Mall reader board.
- A message is also being placed on the City’s website and Cable Channel 15.
- A press release will be sent to all area media.
- A City Corner ad will be printed in the San Leandro Times on June 25 and July 2.
